The 2002 Coca-Cola 600

We went to our first NASCAR event and had a pretty good time.  At first it’s really exciting with all the noise and you can feel the air pushing against you as the cars go by – but as lap after lap goes on it starts to get kinda monotonous.  You hope nobody gets hurt but you start to wish somebody would crash so something different would happen.  You start to notice that all the people that look like they do this on a regular basis are wearing headphones and after a while it sinks in; you can’t hear the track announcers unless you happen to be sitting with a loudspeaker right next to your head and you really can’t tell where some exciting battle for position is happening unless you have a seat way up high where you can see everything on the track – and even then I think it takes a professional to track it all.  So with the headphones you can listen in to the teams themselves or listen to a broadcast of the race you’re actually at.  And the best part of all is once the race is over, it’s an insane madhouse of traffic leaving the place.

Next time we go to a race we’re going to have headphones and leave before the race is over so we can get home in 15 minutes instead of 2 hours and watch the thing on TV.
